Whats happening to this world?
9/11, the continuing violence in Israel/Palestine, the London subway bombings, the Kashmir bombings, car bombings in Iraq, terrorism in Sri Lanka, bombings in Bangladesh, bombings in Egypt, the Taleban lead violence and political assassinations in Afghanistan, ETA bombings in Spain, violence and instability in various regions of Pakistan, the callous and brutal regimes in Africa. And this is only the tip of the iceberg. What is this world coming to? Can't we all just sit down and discuss our differences rather than trying to achieve our goals through violence?
What's more surprising is that this is occuring in this day and age of the information highway, where information is avaiable at the click of a mouse, where more people are better educated, in a time where people should have learnt from the mistakes of the past. So why is this still happening?
I think the problem, besides the obvious reasons, is that we are losing some of the ideals that define humanity. When an innocent girl gets killed by crossfire from a gangsta turf war, all that the gang members can say is that their sorry but she happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Yet they shot each other in highly populated areas. The modern lifestyle can also be very stressful, life have become the rat race that it is can have adverse effects on people not strong enough to deal with. Being nice isn't "cool" anymore, people are more willing to take advantage of others. People also seem to allow their stubborness and pride to alter their views and perceptions on life and are more resistant to idealogical change.
I'd like to know what makes the terrorists think that killing innocent civilians will help them get their way. What were they thinking? That crashing a couple of planes into the Twin Towers will make the U.S. is going to cower before them? That by murdering local civilians the U.S. is going to leave Iraq? And on the other side of the coin, the current U.S. adminitration in their arrogance thought they could just waltz into Iraq and make it a democracy. As it stands now, both sides are not going to accept defeat and the endless cycle of violence will continue. What did you want for X'mas again? Peace on earth and good will to all man? Yeah? Well tough luck.
